BCJH artists earn highest ratings at Regional contest

BAY CITY, April 24, 2017—Four Bay City Junior High Visual Arts students presented their pieces at the Junior VASE (Visual Arts Scholastic Event) at Stroman Middle School in Victoria, April 8th. All four earned perfect scores and Superior Ratings in their divisions, and each received a Regional medal.

The young artists are Julissa Gonzalez, Ayden Tobias, Layna Gilbert and Shelbie Smith.

At the Regional event, students were interviewed with their artwork by a juror to determine the degree each artwork demonstrated originality of concept, technical expertise, understanding of the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills), and the interpretation of the student's stated intent.

The jurors evaluated the art using a numeric rating system based on an established rubric.

Divisions are indicated by the color of the medal's ribbon and show how many years they have participated in junior high art classes.

BCJH Visual Arts teachers are Christy Pliler and Leslie Stevens.
