Possible fireworks or gunfire near the park in the 1200 block of West Eighth Street

FREEPORT, April 20, 2017—A man called police at about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday to report possible fireworks or gunfire near the park in the 1200 block of West Eighth Street, Freeport Police Capt. Ray Garivey said. The same man called again a few minutes later to tell officers an unconscious, wounded teenager was lying face down in the grass, Garivey said.

Emergency medical personnel quickly arrived at the park and attempted to revive Borja en route to CHI St. Luke’s Health-Brazosport, Garivey said, but the boy was pronounced dead at the hospital at 6:38 p.m.

No arrests had been made by late Wednesday as police continued to interview witnesses, Garivey said. Two males and a female were seen running from the area, but descriptions were not immediately available, the police captain said.

Freeport investigators are following up several leads with the assistance of the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office and District Attorney’s Office.

Borja was an eighth-grade student at Freeport Intermediate School.

Counselors will be available today to support students and staff, Brazosport ISD Superintendent Danny Massey said.

“We ask that everyone keep the family in their thoughts and prayers,” Massey said.

Investigators hope residents who might have seen something will call the police department at 979-239-1211.
